Project Overview
BSGR Guinea, has been actively exploring in the Republic of Guinea for two commodities: iron ore and bauxite. Iron ore is currently its main focus with two projects underway in Simandou South, just north of N'Zerekore in the province Guinée Forestière, and Simandou Blocks 1 and 2, to the east of Kerouane in the province Haute Guinée.
BSGR Guinea's bauxite concessions lie to the northeast of the town Labe in the province Moyenne Guinée, bordering the Republic of Mali. View map here
BSGR Guinea has been active in the Republic of Guinea since February 2006 when it signed a Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU") with the Government of Guinea which was valid for three years and subsequently extended in February 2009. Initially, the concessions included in the MOU were Simandou North, which borders Simandou Block 1 in the north, and Simandou South. In April 2006, BSGR Guinea was awarded 13 bauxite concessions which were added to the agreement.
Initial exploration programmes focused on Simandou North and the bauxite concessions. From field mapping and drilling it became clear that Simandou North had little potential in terms of good quality hematite deposits; the majority of Simandou North consisted of lower grade magnetite. Based on this initial work the decision was made to focus on Simandou South and return 50% of the Simandou North concession to the Government at the time of the permit renewal.
Field mapping and exploration drilling on its bauxite concessions resulted in some 500 million tonnes of bauxite at a cut-off grade of 40% Al2O3. BSGR Guinea engaged Hatch Consulting to complete a scoping study for these concessions which was completed in July 2008. At the time of renewal of the exploration permit, 50% of the bauxite concessions was returned to the Government.
